Fiber Connect 2025: AI, Infrastructure & the Critical Role of Fiber

June 20, 2025

As artificial intelligence continues to reshape how we live, work, and connect, fiber has emerged as the foundational technology enabling this transformation. At Fiber Connect 2025, a panel of industry experts—Jordan Gross (Lumen), Mike Emmendorfer (Calix), Rick Talbot (ACG Research), and Joe Baeumel, VP of Partner Strategies & Business Development at KGPCo—came together to explore the evolving intersection of fiber, AI, and broadband infrastructure. The session was moderated by Peter Cresse of Entropy, Inc.

Fiber: The AI Backbone

The panelists agreed: the rise of AI demands robust and scalable infrastructure, and fiber is at the heart of it all. From powering hyper-scale data centers to delivering high-speed connections in rural communities, fiber is the thread that links innovation to accessibility.

“AI is driving a seismic shift in infrastructure demand,” said Joe Baeumel. “Fiber is no longer just about connectivity—it's about capacity, adaptability, and enabling intelligence at the edge. Whether you're a large ISP or a rural co-op, developing a strategy around edge compute and data center integration is no longer optional—it’s essential.”

Middle Mile Matters

One of the most critical—yet often overlooked—components of broadband delivery is the middle mile. Panelists stressed that without reliable and well-planned middle-mile infrastructure, even the best last-mile connections can fall short. Rick Talbot of ACG Research noted that “middle mile will be redefined in the AI era,” as more compute power moves closer to end users.

Beyond the Metro: Edge Data Centers in Rural America

With hyper-scalers like Microsoft, Meta, and Amazon investing billions into infrastructure, many communities are seeing new data center development. However, not all data centers serve local needs. The panel explored the importance of local edge data centers that not only meet enterprise demand but also enhance community connectivity, economic development, and digital equity.

AI: Not Just the Driver—Also the Tool

Panelists discussed how AI is already being deployed within networks to improve efficiency, reliability, and customer experience. From network slicing to predictive analytics, AI is transforming how service providers operate. Calix’s Mike Emmendorfer emphasized the importance of AI-powered platforms to proactively manage performance and reduce downtime.

Policy & Permitting: The Hidden Hurdle

Jordan Gross from Lumen highlighted a significant challenge: regulatory bottlenecks. Inconsistent permitting processes between jurisdictions are delaying projects and increasing costs. The panel called for standardized “dig once” policies and stronger collaboration among broadband offices, utilities, and service providers.

What’s Next?

Looking ahead, the panel forecasted deeper AI integration, increased edge data center development, and greater emphasis on inter-agency coordination. The ecosystem is evolving fast. Those who invest strategically in scalable infrastructure and community partnerships will be the ones leading the digital economy of tomorrow.
