Elements of a Successful Material and Supply Chain Management Program: Part II: Catalog Management

May 17, 2021

Your supply chain is an asset that must evolve to meet the demands and challenges of your business and the industry. In this series on material and supply chain management we explain the six tactical elements that must be addressed to achieve a successful program. Part Two covers the important of catalog management.

Part II: Catalog Management

Catalog Management – the precise management of item attribute information and item changes – is an often-overlooked process within the supply chain. However, how well you manage item attributes and item changes can be a key factor in the effectiveness of your supply chain. There are three key elements to successful catalog management.

A pre-approved catalog, including alternates.

A very structured item catalog specific to your project can reduce excess or stranded inventory. The catalog should include the primary, approved items for the project build, as well as pre-approved alternates. The inclusion of alternate product becomes especially important if manufacturers cannot keep up with demand and primary items become unavailable. The ability to quickly identify alternate products can drastically save time when replacement items are necessary.

Adhering to a strict item update process.

To ensure an automated flow, it is imperative that all systems that hold item attribute information be in sync. To accomplish this, you must have a structured item update process that is executed on a defined, frequent timeline. An automated flow of data between scoping specialist, purchasing, suppliers and installers reduces manual work and ensures that all parties know exactly which materials are to be stocked and installed.

Adhering to a strict item add/delete process.

To help eliminate excess or stranded inventory, you must follow a structured item add process that ensures replaced items are completely utilized before the replacement item is put into service.
